Alternatives to Eye Drops for Glaucoma Treatment

When it comes to treating glaucoma, the main goal is to lower eye pressure. This is to slow down the degeneration of the optic nerve, which is what causes glaucoma to lead to permanent vision loss. One of the easiest forms of treatment is medication in the form of eye drops. Unfortunately, many patients find this treatment regimen to be extremely inconvenient and a nuisance. For those seeking an alternative solution, our board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Constance Okeke discusses two other treatment options patients have:

Laser treatment is one method of managing glaucoma that uses light energy to help the eye’s natural drainage system work better. This typically takes about five minutes or less and is performed in a clinical room, versus an operating room. No incisions are required, and it can be an effective solution for the majority of patients.

Surgery is another alternative treatment for glaucoma that can be especially beneficial for those who have cataracts. They can opt for Microinvasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), which can address both problems at the same time.

Although glaucoma drops are the most common treatment option, we will work with you to find the best solution for your needs and lifestyle. Laser treatments and surgery can both provide great results for helping control glaucoma, while reducing or eliminating the need for eye drops.
