Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, Eastern Virginia Medical School
Dr. Joly is a board-certified ophthalmic plastic surgeon with over twenty years of specialized experience including lid lesions, orbital surgery, and lid surgery. He is currently Head of Oculoplastics at Eastern Virginia Medical School Department of Ophthalmology and holds an Assistant Professorship in that department. Dr. Joly lectures locally and nationally in the field of oculoplastic surgery and has published numerous book chapters, journal articles, and web articles in this field. He serves on the editorial board of Ocular Surgery News. Dr. Joly practices at Virginia Eye Consultants and Renew Aesthetic Center.
Dr. Joly completed his fellowship in orbital and oculoplastic surgery at the University of British Columbia, a world-renowned center for the study of orbital disease in Vancouver, BC, and his ophthalmology residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland, OH, where he served as chief resident. He completed the Medical Scientist Training Program with a combined MD/PhD in neurophysiology at the University of Buffalo Medical School. His research project there involved cortical mapping of visual function in primates.
Dr. Joly is often called on to collaborate with Mohs dermatologic cancer surgeons, neurosurgeons, and head and neck cancer surgeons at Sentara’s Norfolk General Hospital and at Children’s Hospital of the Kings’ Daughters in ophthalmic plastic surgical cases. He works closely with neurologists, endocrinologists, and rheumatologists in the Tidewater area in cases involving the function of the orbit.
Originally from Buffalo, New York, Dr. Joly and his wife Lee are proud to call Norfolk their home for more than a decade. Their four children are pursuing their own ambitions in college and beyond after graduating from Maury and Granby high schools in Norfolk. On occasion you might catch Dr. Joly regaling the crowd with his rendition of God Bless America at a Tides baseball game or leading the National Anthem at an ODU basketball game or an American Diabetes Association Bike-a-thon. His patients have been known to be entertained with his singing along with the radio during their surgeries.
