LipiFlow® Dry Eye Treatment

Eye drops, warm compresses, and prescription medications are all common treatment suggestions for patients suffering from chronic dry eye. However, these treatment methods may not work for everyone. At Virginia Eye Consultants, we offer the LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System for patients who have not found success with other dry eye solutions.

How does LipiFlow® work?

LipiFlow® can resolve the symptoms of dry eye by reviving the eyes’ natural oil production. When the tear film contains the ideal ratio of lipids, the evaporation rate is reduced and your eyes remain properly lubricated. With the LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System, our doctors can warm and release oils that have hardened and clogged the glands responsible for the lubrication in your eyes. Consequently, this treatment addresses the root cause of dry eye rather than simply treating the symptoms of the condition. The entire treatment takes approximately twelve minutes to complete.

Am I a candidate for LipiFlow®?

Many patients who have the symptoms of dry eye are unaware that they suffer from the condition, which is why our dry eye self evaluation quiz can serve as a great first step toward resolving your symptoms. If you choose to schedule an appointment with us, one of our eye doctors in Virginia Beach will examine your tear film quality and meibomian glands (responsible for oil production) to determine if LipiFlow® may improve the comfort and health of your eyes. At that point in time, you can decide if treatment with the LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System is right for you.

What Can I Expect After My LipiFlow® Treatment?

Typically, there is no downtime associated with LipiFlow® dry eye treatment. While many patients experience relief from the symptoms of dry eye within a couple weeks, the full results of the treatment may take several months for patients with severe cases.

Though the LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System does target the source of dry eye, our doctors may still recommend eye drops or another auxiliary treatment to maximize your results.
